Life is Just a Box of Memes
June 8, 2024
Memetics is a concept that seems to permeate every aspect of our existence, from the personal to the professional, from the biological to the cultural. At its core, memetics is about the propagation of information, and it's the driving force behind everything we do.
I've been thinking a lot about this lately, especially in the context of genetics. Our DNA is really just a set of instructions, a code that propagates the meme of ourselves from one generation to the next. It's why we have this innate desire to leave a legacy, to ensure that our meme continues on long after we're gone.
But memetics goes beyond just biology. It's why culture is such a powerful force in the world. Ideas, beliefs, and traditions are all just memes that propagate from one person to the next, shaping the way we think and act. In a way, we're all just vessels for these memes, spreading them to others and helping them evolve over time.
Even starting a company is just another way of propagating a meme. The success of a business is largely determined by how well it can spread its meme, whether that's through marketing, product, or customer service. The companies that succeed are the ones that create a meme that resonates with people, that spreads like wildfire and takes on a life of its own.
But there's an EVEN deeper level to this. Propagation of information creates negative entropy bubbles in our corner of the universe. While entropy increases elsewhere, we've found ourselves caught in a natural system that tries to eliminate entropy by propagating information. Through this lens, memetics is actually what defines the human experience. Our innate desire to propagate information is inherently linked with our desires to control entropy in the universe.
So as I sit here, pondering the nature of existence and my place in the grand scheme of things, I can't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. We're all just tiny pieces in this cosmic puzzle, but each of us has the power to make a difference, to leave our mark on the world and shape the course of history. And who knows? Maybe one day, our meme will be the one that breaks free from the confines of our little blue planet and spreads throughout the cosmos.
But for now, I'll just keep grinding away at my own little corner of the universe. One day at a time, one meme at a time.
